(w/ADD) Number of Ukrainian war refugees registered in Latvia rises to 26,541

RIGA, May 3 (LETA) - A total of 26,541 Ukrainian civilians that have fled war in their country have been registered in Latvia so far, according to the Interior Ministry's latest data.

Since the start of the war in Ukraine, residence documents with the right to employment have been issued to 20,489 Ukrainian refugees, while 9,850 persons have needed the civil protection commissions' assistance in finding accommodation.

lthough the number of Ukrainian refugees has grown somewhat, the number of people seeking housing with the help of the state and local governments is still below 10,000, which means that the rest find accommodation on their own or are staying with relatives or friends, Interior Minister Marija Golubeva (Development/For) told journalists following a government meeting.

The minister also informed that since the start of the war, the number of Ukrainians findings jobs in Latvia has been growing as well. There are more than 3,500 such people, but their number might be even higher, the minister said.
