RIGA, May 25 (LETA) - Russia poses long-term threats to peace and security in Europe and the wider world, Latvian Prime Minister Krisjanis Karins (New Unity) said in his speech at the international conference Riga StratCom Dialogue 2022 on Wednesday.

s far as Russia's unprovoked war in Ukraine is concerned, the common goal of all Western allies is to ensure Ukraine's victory over Russia, the prime minister's spokesman Sandis Sabajevs quoted Karins as saying.

To ensure peace and security in Europe and the world, Russia must lose this war. Ukraine must win. For us, this is the only way back to peaceful life. Any other outcome will be another step towards a world unknown to us, Karins said, reminding that the first steps were Russia's aggression against Georgia in 2008 and the unlawful annexation of Ukraine's Crimea in 2014, as well as warfare in Ukraine's Donbas region.

The Latvian prime minister criticized some Western politicians' approach to dealing with Russia - seeking right words in communication with Russia's authoritarian President Vladimir Putin and trying to appease him.

Karins went on to say that the Western allies are operating in three fronts to secure Putin's defeat in the war against Ukraine - military, economic and information front.

In the military sphere, the Western allies provide assistance to Ukraine by supplying military equipment and weapons. Latvia together with Estonia have provided the largest military support to Ukraine relative to their GDP, Karins said, urging the West to keep providing military assistance to Ukraine.

In the economic front, the West works to weaken the Russian economy to reduce its ability to finance its war against Ukraine. This is being achieved by imposing sanctions - the European Union (EU) has already approved five sanctions packages.
