Riga will have to take down Soviet-era monument in Pardaugava by November 15

RIGA, May 25 (LETA) - The Riga City Council will have to dismantle the Soviet-era monument in Riga until November 15, according to the draft bill supported by the Saeima education, culture and science committee today.

The bill provides that objects glorifying Soviet and Nazi regimes in the territory of Latvia should be demolished by November 15 at latest. This refers to the monument in Riga's Victory Park.

The committee also discussed an idea that the society should not only be given an opportunity to donate financial resources for dismantling of the monuments praising the Soviet regime, but also provide services.

The bills has been sent to the Saeima for the first reading in a fast-track procedure.
