Riga City Council plans to decide on dismantling of monument to Soviet soldiers soon

RIGA, May 12 (LETA) - Riga City Council intends to decide on dismantling the monument to Soviet soldiers in Riga's Pardaugava very soon, a representative of Riga Mayor Martins Stakis informed LETA.

The mayor's adviser Aleksis Zoldners indicated that the city council is ready to take a political decision on the monument's future.

fundraising drive on the charity website Ziedot.lv had collected around EUR 127,000 for the removal of the memorial by 15:00 Thursday.

s reported, the Saeima on Thursday passed in the final reading amendments to the agreements the Republic of Latvia and the Russian Federation signed in Moscow on April 30, 1994, drafted by the Foreign Ministry to remove legal obstacles to dismantling the monument to Soviet soldiers in Riga's Pardaugava.

The amendments provide to suspend operation of Article 13 of the intergovernmental agreement on the social protection of Russian military pensioners and their family members living in Latvia. Article 13 also regulates the maintenance of memorial structures and mass burial sites.
