Police since 2019 have been successfully using wastewater monitoring to combat drugs

RIGA, May 7 (LETA) - The State Police has been successfully using wastewater monitoring in the fight against drugs since 2019, Sandis Radzins, the head of the 2nd Department of the Organized Crime Control Department of the State Police, told LETA.

Radzins explained that the laboratory tests for police purposes are compiled by the European Monitoring Center for Drugs and Drug Addiction in Belgium.

t the same time, this monitoring is very important for the Latvian health sector, as it is responsible for the treatment of drug addicts in Latvia and reducing their addiction.

Such monitoring allows the police to confirm or, on the contrary, deny law enforcement views, predictions and trends in drug trafficking. "For example, amphetamine group substances, cocaine and MDMA tablets appear more in this wastewater on weekends," Radzins added.
