NATO jets scrambled 3 times last week to intercept Russian planes

VILNIUS, Aug 1 (LETA--BNS) - Fighter jets stationed in the Baltic states as part of NATO's air policing mission were scrambled three times last week to intercept Russian military aircraft flying in the international airspace over the Baltic Sea, the Lithuanian Defense Ministry said on Monday.

Jets were not scrambled to patrol the Lithuanian, Latvian and Estonian airspace along the borders with Belarus and Russia.

On July 26, allied fighter jets were scrambled to intercept an IL-76 as it was flying in the international airspace from Kaliningrad to mainland Russia. The aircrafts was flying with its onboard transponder off, had no flight plan but was in contact with the regional flight control center.
