Ministry of Defense wants to achieve at least 30% of orders for defense sector to be produced in Latvia

RIGA, July 28 (LETA) - The Ministry of Defense (MoD) wants to achieve that at least 30 percent of orders for the defense sector are produced in Latvia, Minister of Defense Artis Pabriks (For Development) wrote on his Twitter account today.

He points out that due to the Russian war on Ukraine, the risks for Latvia are increasing, and thus the needs of the army, which cannot be fully met by private manufacturers. A shortage has developed, some components have to wait half a year or a year, including ammunition. If the situation does not change, stockpiling will be difficult.

The politician is convinced that currently there are many small and capable companies whose capacity to start mass production, quality assurance and integration of several manufacturers is insufficient.
