Latvia wants joint EU decision on seizing frozen Russian assets to rebuild Ukraine - Foreign Ministry

RIGA, May 9 (LETA) - Latvia would support a joint European Union (EU) decision on seizing frozen Russian assets to rebuild Ukraine, Foreign Ministry press secretary Janis Bekeris told LETA.

Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics (New Unity) said earlier that talks are under way on the EU level on a possible confiscation of sanctioned Russian assets and using them to rebuild war-ravage Ukraine. A national position will therefore be needed on this matter later, the minister said.

Bekeris indicated that EU member states are currently freezing financial and other assets of persons subject to the bloc's sanctions. Using these assets for the rebuilding of Ukraine would mean their confiscation, but EU regulation do not provide for such confiscation.
