RIGA, May 4 (LETA) - Latvia's Russians must understand that the war in Ukraine has re-opened historical wounds for Latvians, former President Valdis Zatlers emphasized in an interview with Latvian Television this morning.

He admitted that for the first time during the war he had seen how strong the Latvian nation was, from which the "caution of peasants" has disappeared, and there is a confidence to help the Ukrainian refugees unselfishly and without restraint.

"The 9 million euros raised have not been donated by the state either - people simply want to donate. The selflessness of the people shows how strong the people of Latvia have become," Zatlers said.

He agrees that Latvian society is very complicated, but knowing this for a long time, this awareness is an advantage for Latvia. According to Zatlers, the Latvia's Russians are still afraid to reveal their views, but these people must be helped to overcome their insecurities, because Latvians are currently showing confidence in themselves, but Latvia's Russians cannot do so yet.
