Hiiumaa municipality seeking power grid update with Latvia-Estonia-Finland connection

TALLINN, Aug 2 (LETA--BNS) - The rural municipality of Hiiumaa has made a proposal to the Estonian Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications to negotiate with the country's southern and northern neighbors in order to build a south-north electricity network connection from the northern tip of Courland in Latvia across the islands of Saaremaa and Hiiumaa to the Lieto substation in Finland and with this also update the power grid of Hiiumaa island.

The electricity system operators of Estonia and Finland, Elering and Fingrid, signed a memorandum of understanding in late June in which they agreed to start working together with a view to building the third Estonia-Finland electricity connection, Estlink 3, Hiiumaa rural municipality council chair Anu Pielberg said in a letter to the ministry.

dditionally, according to Pielberg, Estonia has committed to contributing at least 7 gigawatts of environmentally friendly production capacity out of the Baltic Sea's total potential of 90 gigawatts.
