Exceptions to sanctions against Russia to ensure export of grain are permissible - MPs

RIGA, July 20 (LETA) - If exceptions to the sanctions against Russia are not established regarding the export of grain, then there will be a famine, MP Dagmara Beitnere-Le Galla (Conservatives), member of the Saeima's European Affairs Committee, told LETA.

The emergence of a global famine would mean new waves of migration for Europe, she admitted. "We are all in connected vessels, and any disharmony leads to the next," said Beitnere-Le Galla, admitting that in this case she sees a reason to make exceptions to the sanctions against Russia.

When asked whether such a move by the European Union (EU) would not create new opportunities to circumvent sanctions, the MP stated that this is already happening now, so each case must be identified and exposed.

ccording to Beitnere-Le Galla, the EU's unity in determining sanctions exceptions will depend on communication and the arguments presented.

Meanwhile, MP Atis Lejins (New Unity), deputy chairman of the Saeima's Foreign Affairs Committee, also believes that "there is no other way out" - exceptions to sanctions regarding food trade must be established. He, too, sees the possibility of a significant influx of African immigrants, which would occur if many millions faced starvation due to grain shortages.
