European edition of Novaya Gazeta to be published in Latvia

RIGA, May 6 (LETA) - The independent Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta starts publishing its European edition in cooperation with Latvian press publisher Rigas Vilni on Friday, LETA was told at the publishing house.

Novaya Gazeta, whose chief editor is Nobel Prize winner Dmitry Muratov, was forced to suspend operations in Moscow after the Kremlin stepped up its clampdown on free press following the invasion of Ukraine.

Novaya Gazeta, which was founded in 1993 with support from the last Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, was the last newspaper in Russia that was still criticizing President Vladimir Putin and his policies.
