Estonian agriculture minister: Adoption of supplementary budget must not be delayed

TALLINN, May 17, BNS - According to Estonian Minister of Rural Affairs Urmas Kruuse, the adoption of the supplementary budget must not be delayed, because the later the supplementary budget is adopted by the Riigikogu, the greater the risk subsidies intended for farmers are at.

The European Commission has come up with proposals to deal with the current crisis, the most important of which are the implementation of a crisis reserve and the creation of a temporary state aid framework. The agricultural sector is supported by the European Union in the amount of 500 million euros, of which 2.5 million euros are allocated to Estonia. The Estonian state will contribute another nine million euros.

"We cannot delay the adoption of the supplementary budget. In order to benefit from a grant co-financed by the European Union, we must pay the full amount by September 30," Kruuse said in a press release.

The minister confirmed that the Ministry of Rural Affairs will do its utmost to ensure that the support money reaches farmers on time and thereby reduce the pressure of input prices...
