Estonia: Kaitseliit to be active in Siil exercise together with defense forces, allies

TALLINN, May 17, BNS - As part of the Siil large-scale military exercise that kicked off on Monday, members of the defense forces of Estonia and allied nations will be active in the territory of the Western regional command of the Kaitseliit (Defense League) volunteer corps, mainly Saaremaa island, starting from Tuesday.

On Tuesday, the Siil exercise will become more visible to residents of the southwestern city of Parnu, as Kaitseliit volunteers and naval personnel will be active in the area of Parnu harbor between the afternoon and midnight. The units will practice port protection and interaction. Kaitseliit volunteers will also be operating in areas surrounding the port.

From Wednesday, various activities will be practiced by members of the defense forces, members of the Air Force and Navy, as well as allied personnel in the western part of Saaremaa.

Lt. Col. Tonu Miil, commander of the Kaitseliit's Western regional command and the Parnu district of Kaitseliit, noted that although the activities of the Siil exercise this year are focused mainly on southeastern Estonia and the military's central training ground in northern Estonia, there will also be, somewhat exceptionally, brisk activity in the area of responsibility of Kaitseliit's Western regional command, mainly Saaremaa, where the US-led exercise Defender Europe will be taking place in parallel with Siil.

In Saaremaa, live-fire shooting from the MLRS multiple launch rocket system and the Maverick missile system will take place under the command of US Marines, along with an airborne and maritime landing exercise in which helicopters and landing vessels will be used at different locations.
