Estonia issues early warning on gas supply

TALLINN, May 17, BNS - Similarly to Finland and Latvia, Estonia has proclaimed an early warning on its natural gas supply system, which, in accordance with European Union regulations, provides additional opportunities for securing gas supplies in a crisis situation.

Minister of Economic Affairs and Infrastructure Taavi Aas said in a press release that according to system operator Elering, the risks related to gas supplies have increased due to the geopolitical situation, which is why it is important from the point of view of the security of supply to ensure that we have the best possible overview of gas-related transactions on the market.

The minister added that at the same time, activities will be continued to establish a national gas reserve and to create liquefied natural gas (LNG) reception capacity in order to strengthen the country's security of supply and to conclusively discontinue the use of gas of Russian origin.

The early warning stage, agreed by the Competition Authority, gives the state-owned gas system operator additional levers to control and manage gas supply in Estonia.

For example, Elering will ask for monthly overviews from the balance managers of their gas reserves and market transaction volumes. Elering also expects the companies that have taken responsibility for the LNG terminal project to provide information on the construction of the necessary infrastructure in order to obtain certainty about the completion of the necessary infrastructure for security of supply by the next...
