Decline in number of Covid-19 patients does not guarantee that virus will not return in the autumn - CDC

RIGA, May 19 (LETA) - Although the number of Covid-19 patients has decreased, it does not guarantee that the virus will not return in the autumn, Ilze Araja, a spokeswoman for the Center for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC), told LETA.

Referring to previous years, Araja explains that the number of Covid-19 patients has always been lower in the spring and summer seasons, but this does not guarantee that a new Covid-19 variant, such as Omicron, which is many times more infectious than previous variants, will suddenly not appear.

raja reminds that the number of Covid-19 patients rises once school resumes, people resume more indoor activities and they return from summer travels.

Compared to other countries, Araja explains that the Covid-19 incidence rate in Latvia is below the European average. However, the specialist emphasizes that it is not possible to compare the incidence rates completely objectively between different countries, as each country uses different tools to fight Covid-19.
