Court rules to remand Bunkus murder suspect Babenko in custody

RIGA, May 25 (LETA) - Riga City Vidzeme District Court on Wednesday ruled to remand Aleksandrs Babenko, a suspect in the murder case of insolvency lawyer Martins Bunkus, in custody.

Babenko can appeal his detention to Riga Regional Court.

The court has yet to decide on a measure of security for Mihails Ulmans, the other suspect in this murder case. A person can be kept in detention without a court ruling for up to 48 hours. A person who has officially been named a suspect can be subject to a measure of security, the harshest of which is detention.

The State Police informed on Tuesday that law enforcement authorities had managed to identify practically all persons involved in the murder of Bunkus, including the hitman who shot and killed the lawyer and the person who ordered the murder. The hitman and the person who ordered the murder were among several persons taken under arrest on May 24.

Romans Jasins, the head of the 1st department at the Criminal Police, said that this definitely is one of the largest investigation cases on contract killing in the history of the State Police. The case also attracted huge public interest.

"The investigation now is at a stage when we can surely say that it has been successful. We have identified almost all persons involved in the crime, and today the involved people were detained in a carefully planned operation," said Jasins.
