Court rules to also remand Bunkus murder suspect Ulmans in custody

RIGA, May 26 (LETA) - Riga Vidzeme District Court on Thursday ruled to remand businessman Mihails Ulmans, a suspect in the murder case of insolvency lawyer Martins Bunkus, in custody.

Ulmans can appeal his detention to Riga Regional Court.

On Wednesday, the court also ruled to remand in custody another suspect in the case, Aleksandrs Babenko. His attorney Helena Purvina told reporters yesterday that she would appeal the court's ruling.

The State Police informed on Tuesday that law enforcement authorities had managed to identify practically all persons involved in the murder of Bunkus, including the hitman who shot and killed the lawyer and the person who ordered the murder. The hitman and the person who ordered the murder were among several persons taken under arrest on May 24.

Romans Jasins, the head of the 1st department at the Criminal Police, said that this definitely is one of the largest investigation cases on contract killing in the history of the State Police. The case also attracted huge public interest.

"The investigation now is at a stage when we can surely say that it has been successful. We have identified almost all persons involved in the crime, and today the involved people were detained in a carefully planned operation," said Jasins.
