Coalition partners support raising defense spending at a faster pace

RIGA, July 18 (LETA) - Lawmakers from coalition parties have spoken in support of raising defense spending at a faster pace if such a necessity arises.

Rihards Kols (National Alliance, chairman of the Saeima Foreign Affairs Committee, said that it is already clear that Latvia's defense needs will grow. This is linked to the decisions taken at NATO's Summit in Madrid, as the implementation of these decisions will require increased funding. For instance, the number of NATO troops deployed in Latvia will be increased to the size of brigade, which requires additional infrastructure. Also, financing will be needed to develop a new military training ground in Zalve, the MP said.

Krisjanis Feldmans (Conservatives), chairman of the Conservatives political group in the Saeima, stressed the need to boost the armed forces' capacity fast, including by reinstating conscription. In his opinion, the decision on additional defense funding has to be taken as soon as possible, but taking into consideration the Finance Ministry's position.
