Cargo turnover of Latvian ports up 13.1% in four months

Latvian ports handled 16.082 million tons of cargo in January-April 2022, which is an increase of 13.1 percent against the same period last year, according to the Transport Ministry's data.

In the first four months of this year, Latvian ports mostly handled bulk cargo - 8.77 million tons, which is an increase of 37.7 percent against the first four months of last year.

Grain and grain product cargo was reloaded at 1.934 million tons, down 5.5 percent from the respective period in 2021. Woodchip was reloaded at 813,500 tons, down 0.1 percent, and chemical cargos at 478,900 tons, down 21.7 percent. Coal was reloaded at 3.248 million tons compared to 200,700 tons reloaded in the first four months of last year.

Handling of general cargo rose 10.4 percent to 4.549 million tons in January-April this year. Reloading of containerized cargo increased 12.5 percent on year to 1.618 million tons, reloading of timber increased 2.2 percent to 1.486 million tons and handling of roll on/roll off cargo was up 18.4 percent to 1.291 million tons
