Cargo turnover at Riga port up 8.2% in first four months

RIGA, May 10 (LETA) - The port of Riga handled 7.507 million tons of cargo in the first four months of 2022, which is an increase of 8.2 percent against the same period a year ago, according to information released by the port.

Cargo turnover at the port grew primarily thanks to a rise in bulk cargo, particularly coal.

Bulk cargo, which dominated the port's cargo structure in January-April this year, grew 18.8 percent year-on-year to 4.479 million tons. Handling of general cargo was up 6.5 percent to 2.482 million tons and reloading of liquid cargo fell 34.8 percent to 546,600 tons.

The turnover of coal at the port of Riga grew nine-fold to 1.539 million tons in the first four months of this year, making up 20.5 percent of total cargo turnover (2.5 percent a year ago).
